About the Study
An MRI Study of Adolescents with Bulimia Nervosa
We are interested in learning why some people develop eating disorders. We are recruiting girls (ages 12-19) who have a problem with binge-eating and purging and girls who do not.
Participation in this study involves interviews, games and puzzles, as well as taking pictures of your brain using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). There are no known health hazards associated with MRI.
Treatment, free of charge, will be provided for girls in need. Compensation (up to $400) will also be provided for participation. Parental consent is required for girls under 18 years of age.

What is an MRI?
- MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
- MRI uses magnetic and radio waves to take pictures.
- A computer interprets the radio waves from the MRI scanner and creates a picture of the brain.
- MRI pictures can be taken and looked at in different ways. It can help researchers figure out what different parts of the brain do, how different parts of the brain are connected, and much more.
- Since it is done without using any radiation exposure, MRI is a safe way to do research.
Treatment
Our eating disorders clinic provides inpatient, day-patient and outpatient treatment of eating disorders. Our treatment team is composed of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, recreational and occupational therapists and research professionals.
